Lorient, popular offshore racing

What an atmosphere on the quayside at Lorient The public flocked to the events organised by Lorient Grand Large for this Lorient stopover that will go down in history.Sunday was marked by an In-Port race like something out of an Alfred Hitchcock film, the concert by Miossec before almost 6000 fans and the finale by the Patrouille de France over the heads of tens of thousands of stupefied spectator

While the In-Port races are only used as a tie-breaker on the arrival of the Volvo Ocean Race in Goteborg, they are still disputed as though in a race for survival during one hour. The Lorient In-Port was no exception: behind Team Alvimedica impeccable from start to finish, there was quite a captivating fight for the remaining places. One by one, Team Vestas, Brunel, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and finally Mapfre took the lead in the fleet pursuing the American team. The markers were rounded with tenths of seconds to spare and the slightest error or slacking cost the teams dearly. Some of the teams played that particular game well, like Mapfre and Dongfeng Race Team who, on a final downwind leg, used the wind’s rotation to come out of nowhere and pip the rest of the fleet at the post. One person in particular must have loved today. Sébastien Marsset, a fervent Lorient inhabitant, was the only local member on the Alvimedica team. Winning on home turf (so to speak), always has a special feel.

Buoyed up by the crowd

The huge, good-humoured crowds invaded the quaysides of Lorient La Base at the end of the morning. Live broadcasts of the In-Port race with commentary to enable everyone to understand the ins and outs of the race attracted a wide public, who then stayed on to watch the ups & downs of the Patrouille de France. Following the return of the boats, the skippers' on-the-spot impressions, the exceptional air show which was a combination of virtuosity with a bit of controlled madness thrown in, kept the thousands of spectators who stayed on gasping in amazement. For more than half an hour, the pilots did figure after figure before heading back to their base in Lann Bihoué.

Coastal route

Tomorrow, the Volvo Ocean Race teams will take part in a final Pro-Am race in front of the island of Groix before casting off on Tuesday at 5 pm in the direction of the Dutch port of La Hague, and then Goteborg. Before they take their leave of the Breton coast, the teams will round the “Morbihan” marker in the bay of Quiberon before rounding the little island of Hoëdic and heading north on their merry way. A way of saluting the Morbihan department and the exceptional welcome these sailors received for their final stopover before the epilogue of this Volvo Ocean Race.
