Lorient, France, June 12, 2015 - Ivo Gonzenbach of Feldkirch, Austria will jump from Team Alvimedica June 16 at the start of the final leg of the 2014-2015 Volvo Ocean Race, having earned one of the most coveted sailing experiences of the race by being the highest bidder for the “Jump Seat” in the team’s online auction to benefit heart health in France.

As part of Team Alvimedica’s World Heart Health Charity Tour, sailing fans bid on two unique sailing experiences; the “Jump Seat” as well as six spots on board one of the Pro-Am Races on June 13.

The funds raised through the Lorient auction benefit Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque (MCC), an organization that provides children with heart defects from poor countries the opportunity to have surgery in France when this is impossible in their home country. Hosted by volunteer families and operated in twelve hospitals in France, more than 2,500 children have already been supported since the establishment of the Association in 1996 by Professor Francine Leca and Patrice Roynette.

"We are very glad to count on Alvimedica as a new partner of MCC. We are very touched about the generosity of the company and the availability of the sailors during this Volvo Ocean Race.

Thank you for being involved in our Team to save children," said Patrice Roynette, President of Mecenat Chirurgie Cardiaque.

“We are proud to be able to give back to heart health in each of the local stopover communities where the Volvo Ocean Race takes us,” said Team Alvimedica skipper Charlie Enright. “We are honored that in some small way we can contribute to the work of Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque.”

Team Alvimedica has raised more than $86,000 to date for pediatric heart health charities since the Volvo Ocean Race started from Spain in October.

Sailing fans had the chance to bid on bringing their own team of up to six people to join the Team Alvimedica race crew on one of the Pro-Am Races in the stopover. The inshore races precede the leg start and offer sailing fans the rare opportunity to actually be involved in crew maneuvers with the professional race team as they compete against the Volvo Ocean Race fleet. The “Jump Seat” experience involves departing the dock with the race crew and being on board for the initial racing before the fleet leaves the stopover port. In Lorient, the fleet sets out June 16 for a 960-nautical mile leg to Gothenburg, Sweden that includes a pit-stop in The Hague. The Jump Seat riders experience the exhilarating moments of the start before leaping overboard at a safe moment in the race. The “Jumpers” are then retrieved by a tender boat and brought safely back to shore.

Team Alvimedica is the youngest entry in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015, the world's toughest and longest sporting event. The crew is led by American skipper Charlie Enright, age 30. Alvimedica, the European based medical devices company, is the team’s owner. Founded in 2007, Alvimedica is a fast growing challenger in the global field of interventional cardiology, committed to developing minimally-invasive technologies. This is the team’s first entry in the extremely challenging 39,000-mile race that started October 11, 2014 from Alicante, Spain and features stopovers in 11 ports around the world.
