Lorient has ambition !

The Volvo Ocean Race fleet will be in Lorient from June 16th to July 1st, when they set sail again for Galway. During two weeks the boats and crews will be the center of the attention but concerts, networking, and activities will take the whole city on a crazy ride. Let’s focus on the main events!

On the water

The true heros of those two weeks will be the sailors. The Volvo open 70s and their crews are due to arrive in Lorient on June 17th, depending on the weather forecast. On June 10th the action will start at the Museum “Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly” where you will be able to watch the start from Lisbon with live commentating from experienced sailors and direct interaction with the public.

From Thursday June 28th to Sunday July 1st, the Volvo open 70s will again be the stars in Lorient’s harbour with, in this order: practice day, Pro-Am Race, In-Port Race and the start. With a nautical playground from the headland “Le Tallud” to the coast of Groix, the regattas will offer an amazing sight.

From June 22nd to the 24th, the small Minis 6.50 will take over from the big boats with the “Chrono” race. Only for the 6.5m monohulls, this original regatta aims at setting a reference time to go around the island of Groix, just across the bay. Skippers can choose when they start the race against the clock, making for a strategic challenge all weekend long on the waters between the VOR village and Groix.

On June 23rd and 24th, young sailors will participate to the Youth Sailing Series on the small lake “Le TER”, only a few minutes’ walk from the race village. Eight teams will compete on the water. The winner of this unique team format is the first to get all four of their boats across the line.

Last but not least, during the stopover, the public will be able to play on the water as well: come sail on small boats, go kayaking or try going for a ride on a Stand Up Paddle Board.

An exceptional Race Village

The Volvo Ocean Race’s partners’ village will be one of the main attractions this fortnight. There is something for everyone in the village with High Technology games, children workshops and activities, free live entertainment and pavilions that stretch the imagination to make sure you have

a good time... you’ll just have to come and enjoy!

Small and big kids

The village offers a very wide range of activities for the young and the young at heart. Inflatable balls will allow your kids to walk on the water while smaller kids will be able to play on a small pedal cars’ circuit and the strong ones can challenge each other on the race grinders, just like on the racing yachts. More serious subjects won’t be forgotten and the association Skeleton Sea will raise awareness about ocean preservation with a movie and an art workshop for kids. A dynamic

simulator and 3D cinema will take you onboard a VOR70 launched at full speed so get ready!

Let the music play

How could we think about something popular without artists? Music will be part of the show with many free concerts, brass bands, street artists, actors, musicians and story tellers whose voices will make the show memorable. The eclectic program will gather juggling tricks, giant frescos, music schools and the famous Bagad de Lann Bihoué (Breton bagpipes). The Volvo Ocean Race stopover will also give an opportunity to photographer Xavier Dubois who, will create a unique photomontage of Eric Tabarly with the help of the public.

As entertainment comes with stars we are proud to announce that French singers Yannick Noah and Sergent Garcia will be part of the show!

From the museum “Cité de la Voile” to Lorient’s fishing pier

In addition the party will take place, for a weekend, at Lorient’s fishing pier, only a few minutes’ walk away from the village. On the agenda for June 23rd and 24th: food tastings, concerts, demonstrations... and lots of other activities to give you a taste of Brittany!

The museum “Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly”, at the heart of the village, has already started an exhibit about the Volvo Ocean Race’s backstage. It will organize specific workshops for classes during the stopover.

For two weeks, there will always be something happening on the village. This stopover puts Lorient on the map and it will be memorable. This is one of the greatest opportunities to show everyone that Lorient has become one of main cities for offshore sailing in France.
