Lorient was born twice: on the 17th century, the East India Company made the port of L’Orient (The Orient in French) hold sway throughout the globe, and after WWII, the city had to rise from the burning ashes of the Allies bombing, aimed at destroying the German Keroman Submarine Base. Ironically, this base stayed as a legacy of this dark period. After the army left on the late 90s, a dream came out. The Base redeveloped thanks to racing and yachting, and is now anchored to modernity, youth and innovation. Today, the Base is the heart of the “Sailing Valley”, its domestic businesses and athletes glow all around Europe.

Franck Cammas, French competitor in the Volvo Ocean Race with Groupama Sailing Team, Alain Gautier, Jérémie Beyou, Jean-Pierre Dick and many other skippers established their team next to the famous Pen Duick and the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly. The city gained this acknowledgement with passion and hard work, and proves it again with the welcoming of one of the most prestigious races in the world: the Volvo Ocean Race (ex-Whitbread), a crewed round the world race with stopovers. The competitors left Alicante, Spain, in November 2011, stopped in South Africa, Abu Dhabi, China, New-Zealand and Brazil and will stop in Miami, Lisbon and Lorient before finishing in Lorient’s Irish twin city, Galway. Lorient, the wounded city, is now called Lorient’geles by its inhabitants, a nice revenge on the past!

The world’s eyes turning to Lorient

More than ever, Lorient will be Lorient’geles for the French stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race! From June 16th to July 1st, the Submarine Base welcomes everyone to enjoy a show ashore as well as at sea, and even on the air, as the Patrouille de France will come. The “Sailing Valley” will roll out the red carpet for the Queen of international ocean racing. Lorient is designing this stopover just like the great festivals of Brittany. Therefore, everyone can come and enjoy a wonderful time.

Revealing the poster

The official poster of the Volvo Ocean Race French stopover in Lorient is now revealed. Bleu Safran, a graphic studio from Lorient, designed this poster which invites everyone to two weeks of sports and festivities at the Submarine Base. It will be spread in all the West of France, and also in national, regional and nautical press and on the Race Village.

A show by the Patrouille de France

After a long absence, the famous aerial acrobats of the French air force will be back in Lorient for the opening of the Volvo Ocean Race Village. The tricolor acrobats will be in charge of the afternoon show on June 16th a few hundred meters over the Submarine Base (the hour is still to be determined). This amazing show needs a precise setting up on the ground, as well as a perfect performance by the pilots of the nine Alphajets.

10,000 faces for a giant mosaic

You, him, them… Come and have your picture taken by the Britton photograph Xavier Dubois for the “Faces of Lorient”. Each portrait will become one of the pixels of a giant fresco that will recover the K2, one of the gigantic bunkers of the Submarine Base. Once finished, the mosaic will represent the picture of an emblematic, and for now mysterious, character of Lorient. Almost 500 portraits have already been taken. The next two dates to be photographed: April, 28th, on the Place Aristide Briand, in front of the Fnac in Lorient, and May 17th at Port Louis, during the Festival “Avis de temps forts”. The photographer will continue collecting portraits in the Race Village during the stopover, and the mosaic will be completed and revealed on June 28th.

Yannick Noah, Sergent Garcia and Britton bands, music for everyone!

This year, the “Fête de la Musique” (Music Festival held on June 21st) will last two weeks!  The Volvo Ocean Race stopover has been imagined as a festival with an eclectic program, to please both eyes and ears and to make people from 7 to 77 with national stars and Britton groups. Of course, don’t miss Yannick Noah’s concert on June 22nd. The tickets cost 38€, the lowest fare of his acoustic tour. They’re selling like hot cakes, so don’t wait! For the release of his very “caliente” new album “Una y Otra Vez”, Sergent Garcia will perform one of his first concert dates in Lorient. And every day, at noon or at cocktail hour, you can come and enjoy rock, jazz, electro music or energetic bands like the Fanfare en Pétard, which never lets anyone indifferent!

Energetic volunteers!

There are already 830 volunteers for the Volvo Ocean Race stopover! They met on March 25th for a presentation of their missions by the team of Lorient Grand Large. They all show great enthusiasm to make this stopover a success. Someone told us they even have a surprise coing up… Anyway, you can still register on the dedicated page of our website www.volvooceanracelorient.com. Join us!

Next week-end: Brazil as if you were there!

For every stopover, Lorient Grand Large invites everyone to watch for free and live the competitors of the Volvo Ocean Race leave for the next port. This week-end, the boats will leave Itajai, Brazil for the 6th leg of their World Tour, to Miami. We’ll be in the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly’s auditorium, Saturday 21st 6:45 p.m. for the In-Port Race and Sunday 22nd, same time, for the depart. Come and cheer on Franck Cammas’ Groupama Sailing Team, from Lorient, who’s leaving with a new mast (following its problem off Uruguay). The shore crew had to work for hundreds of hours to get Groupama 4 in its best shape!

Michelin enters the family

The tire star is joining the party. MICHELIN has joined the family of Official Providers of the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover in Lorient, next to AZIMUT, INTER-POLE, LOXAM and LORI SI.
