La base de Keroman, vue aérienne
La base de Keroman, vue aérienne

The city of Lorient, which is a harbour of Morbihan and stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race, now occupies a special place in the world of sailing. But the retraining of the submarine base into a mecca for offshore racing needed time.

Keroman submarine base was first the heartbreak of Lorient. Built to serve as a shelter for German submarines, it was the cause of incessant bombing and a reason why Lorient was one of the last town to be released from the Occupation.

After the war, the submarine base was used by the Navy, but it was then left behind in 1996. It was at that time that the idea to use it for offshore races and marine industry grew up, until the success we know today (files coming from the municipal archives of Lorient).
