PAN-PAN, Mayday and other distress signals

inside the CROSS ETEL's office
Le Falcon de la Marine Nationale

At sea, like anywhere else, hard knocks can also come your way. That’s why, CROSS Etel with help of Customs and pilots of the fleet of the National Navy offers a cycle of three conferences on safety at sea.

For each conference, a Cross Etel representative, who coordinates sea rescue from raz de Sein to Spanish border, details first the different levels of distress signals, then how to launch them and what are the means they induce. You have to know that a Mayday (maximum alert level means imminent danger to life) mobilizes each time all possible means to save the person in danger. It is under Cross’ coordination. A PAN – PAN is a request for rescue but there is no immediate danger to anyone's life.

In a second part, pilots of the 24F, fleet of planes based in Lann Bihoué, explains the role of planes from location of a shipwrecked to the eventual release of a safety chain. It’s also the occasion to speak about delay between the call, the overflight of an airplane and the effective rescue attempts.

And to finish, the helicopter’s pilots of the 32F will then explain the procedure to ease the helihoisting operations.

These kinds of briefings that are nowadays the basic before departure for offshore competitors are also very rich in lessons for the yachtsmen.

Conferences:

-       Sunday 24th of June from 4 to 5:30 pm

-       Wednesday 27th of June from 3 to 4:30 pm then followed by a helihoisting demonstration in front of the Cité de la Voile
