Grant wants the South to win

In New-Zealand, to become a sport idol, you have to play the finale of the Rugby World Cup, make many times the round the world or win the America’s cup. Grant Dalton, director of team New-Zealand has few assets to bring.

The director of Camper team New-Zealand was visiting the village of the Volvo Ocean Race to brief his team. It was the perfect occasion to discuss with him about the Volvo Ocean Race and a little bit about the Cup.

Future of the Volvo Ocean Race: “The change to monotype is the best solution. We can’t live one's own little world anymore. Today, the priority is to have more boats at the start. The public doesn’t care if the boats are different or not, what the public wants is sailing stories… The money is becoming rare to build prototypes. The final decision to reduce the cost of the Volvo Ocean Race is a very wise decision.”

The choice of Bruce Farr as the architect: “He may have not built the fastest boats of that edition of the race but he knows his job. He has experience on the production of monotype boats’ series. Regarding reliability or strength, it is a major advantage. Who cares if they are not the fastest, they are all the same!”

Achievements of Groupama 4? “They deserve their first place. They began with their “French sailing style” on the first leg. On the second one, they move to an Anglo-Saxon style. Then they finally found their own style, a mix of both. I think they are the fastest boat of the fleet. The preparation work is also of good quality. To me, they are gonna win that Volvo Ocean Race, no doubt of that.”

The America’s Cup : “We focus all the possible energies in New-Zealand to win. We would like to be the small South hemisphere’s country that bothers the American’s fortunes. If we win the Cup, we will radically change the pre-established scheme. The system of today is an economical aberration. It results in a 3 billionaires’ competition with the support of a communication staff. The coming end is obvious…”
