The Vendée Globe pontoons haven’t emptied since the opening 2 weeks ago. 765 000 visitors have already made the trip to les Sables d’Olonne to admire the 20 boats that will leave for this incredible race.

Pioneers yesterday, competitors today

A man or a woman and the immensity of liquid deserts. Since its first edition, the Vendée Globe sets the scene with a global regatta that figures solo sailors with boats built to sprint down the huge waves from the Southern Oceans. The crazy pioneers from yesterday are today’s best offshore sailing competitors. In 1989, the 13 guys who were on the starting line began writing the history of the race by all coming back home safely.

Alain Gauthier was one of them and he even went back 3 years later to write his name on the first line of the winners’ list. Since then, the skipper who has forged his talent in the Lorient Bay, is still one of the emblematic figures of the race. Security consultant for the race management, he is in an ideal situation to watch the evolution of this legendary race. There are 20 competitors this year and the level has never been that homogenous to the delight of fans trying to make their prognosis.

The ultimate challenge

To get to the top of that Mount Everest they need to gather all their strengths: perseverance, the ability to push a boat really hard, to get the upper hand on other competitors and to draw on one's resources to the edge. The Vendée Globe is the ultimate race in offshore sailing, the sacred grail for skippers, and all their victories – be it to win or to finish – are incredible achievements.
