Lorient will host the Volvo Ocean Race, the toughest fully-crewed race around the world, once more from 9 -17 June in 2015.

The announcement of the dates of the Lorient stopover means the full Volvo Ocean Race schedule is finally complete. After some 38,000 nautical miles of ocean racing around the globe the boats will arrive in Lorient around 9 June for a week of festivities at the submarine base of Keroman, the biggest offshore racing port in Europe.

As in the previous edition in 2011-12, the Lorient region goes into the event with high ambition and great motivation. An event of this calibre in Lorient offers a major economic stimulus for the region, with the yachting industry, tourism, transportation and hospitality among the areas that will benefit most. Hosting the Volvo Ocean Race is a great opportunity to highlight southern Brittany’s dynamism and Lorient has two main ambitions to fulfill: Promoting the region as an attractive offshore racing hub for the yachting industry based on reliable companies and stakeholders; and the staging of a magnificent show that will ensure a successful stopover experience for visitors.

The stopover’s programme will include many fun activities (including concerts, exhibitions and a free introduction to sailing , as in 2012) as well as the Pro-Am Race on Saturday 13 June and the In-Port Race on Sunday 14 June 2015.

Local companies will also get the chance to demonstrate what they can offer throughout the time the race is in Lorient.

Bernard Bocquet, CEO Lorient Grand Large

The stopover in Lorient will display Brittany’s know-how in a wide variety of sectors: nautical, agribusiness and renewable energy. Our manufacturers in the yachting industry, from the smallest specialised shop to the bigger companies, whether they specialise in, racing, cruising or yachting, will all have one goal in common: to produce the best quality products. This is the same for maintenance, refitting, chandlery and rental activities.

The term “made in Brittany” deserves international exposure, to match its qualities and ambitions. Hosting a stopover for a race as internationally renowned as the Volvo Ocean Race is a unique opportunity to promote these skills.

The issue is not to discuss whether or not it is the best way to showcase this expertise with a French public. With the economic crisis affecting Europe it is important that we get this international exposure.

Let’s take advantage of the presence in Lorient of journalists and sailing champions to promote the savoir-faire of Lorient, Morbihan and Brittany. This is crucial for the development of these activities and associated jobs."

Tom Touber, COO Volvo Ocean Race SLU

"We're delighted to be coming back to France's sailing capital," said Volvo Ocean Race COO Tom Touber. "We had a tremendous experience here in the last race, with a fantastic welcome for the boats and huge crowds, particularly for race weekend. Coming back here will be a real highlight and it's a fitting place to set off for the final leg."
