It’s show time in Lorient

Lorient la Base is gearing up to welcome the crowds tomorrow for the In-Port race taking place around the island of Groix from 2 pm. The In-Port race could still be decisive in the final rankings for some of the teams. Those concerned are Dongfeng Racing Team, Mapfre, Team Brunel and to a lesser extent Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing.

After a day of relaxation, the Volvo Ocean Race teams are getting back in the saddle. On Saturday, two Pro-Am races and a training race made for a busy day. For the training races, the whole team was on board in race configuration, while for the Pro-Am races, guests were able to try their hand. However, the highlight of the day on Sunday will be the In-Port race. In the general rankings, the In-Port race can still shake things up. For Team Brunel, the challenge is simple: if they want to win, they must finish better than Abu Dhabi in the general In-Port rankings, or gain four points on their direct adversary. For Dongfeng Racing Team and Mapfre, the In-Port rankings could be decisive in the event of a tie in the offshore races.  Just one point separates the two teams in the In-Port races. The fight between them will be ferocious.

The Patrouille de France fly-by

On Saturday evening, the Patrouille de France arrived at the Lann Bihoué airbase in Lorient. After the pilot briefing, the squadron will by flying in reconnaissance prior to the big show tomorrow from 5.45 pm over the quaysides at Lorient la Base. The races have live commentary, the events continue and the return of the boats before the big show by the Patrouille de France make this stopover on the Volvo Ocean Race an exceptional moment. It's not every day that the biggest crewed round-the-world yacht race comes to town.

Lorient Grand Large, the organisers of the event preferred to anticipate the crowds that are likely to flock to Lorient la Base. With reinforced guidance and reception of visitors and additional security measures, everything has been done to ensure the party is a good one. For example, a close partnership with the centre Hospitalier de Bretagne Sud will be able to intervene in an emergency by sending several doctors to the site.

The Lorient stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race is not just a show on the water and in the airs, there are also initiatives that combine a show with good causes. Many well-known sailors have offered equipment and souvenirs for the marine auction in aid of the Société Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer (French lifeboats’ association). A nice way of demonstrating that the solidarity between sailors continues on the land.
